I refuse to be killed over any part of this. It's is unbeta'd, so. (there should be a 'bite me' after that. :X)
Title: Hero
CoM AU. Set several years into the future.
----------
The first time he'd seen his uncle was when Daddy took him with him. His Uncle had been practicing at the time, somewhere among the rocks, fluently and effectively slashing away at a big thing that Daddy later told him was an ogre. Kevenar's mouth had dropped open and stayed that way, his eyes fixed completely on the fighting figure.
The person had stopped after the ogre fell to the ground and stopped twitching, tipping his head slightly towards both of them, and Kev had beamed back at him although he didn't seem to notice. He'd pulled on Daddy's sleeve and asked him who that was, and Daddy had told him that was his Uncle Caliah. And then whispered to him that it was okay to call him Uncle Cal instead because the name was difficult, something that earned him a big hug from Kev and an even wider smile.
He didn't get to see his Uncle Cal much, he never came to visit like Peaches or his Uncle 'Ran, but Daddy sometimes left really late at night, and Mommy would tell Kev that Daddy had to go see Uncle Cal to do some work for a little while.
But whenever it was still before Kev's bedtime and Uncle Cal was waiting, Daddy would take him. And Kev would spend the time they used for talking to stand as close as he dared to his uncle (because he was really tall, it scared Kev a little), simply gazing up at him with shining eyes. Uncle Cal never seemed to notice though, but that didn't matter.
A few months went by like that. And then came the day Uncle Cal came to visit.
Kev would always remember that day. Daddy'd been sick and hadn't been able to go out, so Uncle Cal came to talk to him at home instead. Kev spent that day following him around the house, occasionally bumping into his leg when his uncle stopped suddenly. At one of those times, his Uncle Cal turned about to look at him with those violet eyes (Mommy had told him the name of the color), but hadn't said anything, and Kev had looked back and then trailed after him when he started to walk again.
During dinner (through which Uncle Cal stayed) Kev stayed as close as possible and at one time even went as far as to reach out one tiny hand to softly touch his hair. Those eyes had turned to him again and he'd quickly shied back, then jumped off Daddy's lap and ran to where his crayons were. And he began to draw.
When Uncle Cal stood up to leave, Kev quickly grabbed the piece of parchment he'd been working with and, with starry eyes, held it out to his uncle with an expectant look on his face. He was simply looked at for a minute before, slowly, Uncle Cal took the paper from his eager, outstretched hands and slowly unrolled it, revealing a badly-done image of himself with his sword, protecting Kev from the ogres. One of his eyebrows lifted slightly, and Daddy stood from his chair to peer over Uncle's shoulder at the drawing, loud snickering following immediately after. That earned Daddy a glare from Uncle, and then all the people on the room seemed to disappear and it was just Kev and his Uncle Cal, and then Uncle Cal cleared his throat and told him 'thank you', and Kev was off and floating among pink clouds, long after Uncle left the house, and stayed in that state right up to when Mommy tucked him into his bed.
He hugged his squirrelskin doll tightly to his chest, already sleepy, barely catching a few words floating back to him from where Mommy and daddy were talking. He heard the words "hero worship", and while he didn't understand the second word he knew what the first meant.
Yep. Uncle Cal was his Hero.
sob *kicks Kev away* Need to write more Astri. :3
