I think in a way he always will, legal or not, the same way Omi will always support Kaoru. Or well I like it that way anyway. :D
It does get him a lesser sentence. I have to admit I wasn't sure about this part either, but the trial was starting to get in the way of the overall goal of the story so I really needed to wrap it up. :(
The team is actually pretty tight; good friends, go out drinking frequently unless they're on the clock. I don't think Niwa is usually very lonely, but I also think he started to realize he has been missing out so now it's all sort of hitting him. Or something like that. 8D
