CoM fic. Set several years into the past.
----------
The little human boy made no move to stifle the jaw-popping yawn as he wandered through the streets of Bladen, lifting one hand to rub at his blurry eyes. He was still sleepy, even though he'd slept longer than usual. In fact, he had been getting as much sleep as he'd wanted the past few days, because his resident pillow had not been coming to zap him out of his tree. He hadn't minded the first day, but by the second he was starting to miss the chatter and the pillow. So he had sacrifised his nap time in his favourite tree in favor of searching for the absent shiny hunter. Because really, he needed his pillow to be able to sleep peacefully, and if pillow wouldn't come to him, he would go find pillow.
It was now several hours later, and he had gone to all the places Ty had been known to go. Jewelry shops, places with lots of glass, banks - the shiny coins were a huge attraction - to no avail. He'd wandered the streets, thinking maybe he'd give to some of the richer districts to peek through the windows, but again no luck. Then he'd headed for the market place, where he was idling now, eyes scanning for the reddish head, and when he found it he would bonk the owner and proceed to- ah, there he was!
He sauntered towards Ty, making almost no sound on the pavement, his hands stuck in his pockets in a picture of utter indifference. He finally reached the siriyu and yawned in greeting, and was surprised when two heads looked up at him. He blinked slowly while Ty beamed brightly at him, and focused his eyes on the siriyu girl sitting next to Ty.
She appeared to be maybe a year older than both of them, a cute girl with wide, clear blue eyes and golden hair that fell down to her waist. He took in her features and almost dismissed her as unimportant...almost, if not for the bright flash of light that darted off something in her hands, a something that Ty was eagerly looking at, with those shining eyes that widened just the slightest bit when he saw something he liked. So he looked again.
What she was holding was something he'd never seen before, and clearly neither had his friend (at least he thought Ty was his friend...) from the way he was making eyes at it. It appeared to be a toy of some sort, and it was very...shiny. In all ways. It sparkled and glowed whichever way you turned it, made from colored light that reflected the light. The outer shape looked like a very simple ball, only the effects it had made it special. Aside from the fact it was shiny, something Ty was all too aware of, it also floated and, as a bonus, it played a tune. That grabbed his attention for a minute or two (or five, but he'd never admit it). He'd never heard music played before, not like this, and it was really rather nice. However...
"You didn't come see me at all the last few days." It was delivered in his usual mild voice, only if one listened carefully the slightest hint of accusation could be detected. Ty didn't notice though, he was too fixated on the toy, only taking his attention away from it for the briefest moment to explain that he'd been busy. Although he didn't say with what, but Breiden could make a rather accurate guess at this moment.
Determined to draw Ty out, he poked Ty's shoulder and then, after getting his attention, gestured to the girl. "Who is she?"
"This is Criselda! Her father owns this shop with shinies, see!" Ty gestured towards the wide display of items on one of the tables vendors used for their wares, but Breiden could really care less at this moment, only sparing the items a brief glance. "I saw this shiny token that I liked and Criselda said I could have it for free." He blinked, and looked from Ty to Criselda, who had a wide smile on her face. He'd known from the first minute that she was evil. Bribing Ty with shiny things.../he/ was supposed to be the one stealing shinies for Ty, not her! This was really very, very bad. If everyone started giving Ty free things, Ty wouldn't want to meet with Breiden at all.
Criselda also had this irritatingly cute voice. "Maybe daddy will give the shop to you later when he's too old to work, and you can sell things and then we can get married!" She giggled (how girlish!) and Ty nodded in agreement to her words, eyes still fixed on the shiny. "Yes, I can take the shinies when your daddy is old."
Letting out another yawn, Breiden moved nimbly and swiftly. One hand sneaked out towards the vendor's table and the other moved to yank Ty up, and then he was sprinting off, dragging the protesting siriyu along with him. Once they were a fair enough distance /away/ from the annoying girl (what was her name again?), Brei stopped running, one hand still clenched around Ty's wrist to keep the protesting siriyu from running off. The other hand took something from his pocket that he carefully gave to Ty. It was one of those musical balls.
While Ty turned the ball over in his hand with wide, sparkling eyes, Breiden moved them towards what he considered his tree, gesturing for Ty to settle down on the ground and, once he had that done, flopping down himself and letting his head rest on the other's outstretched legs. "Now you don't have to go there anymore," he said as golden eyes started to slide shut. "'Sides she's not supposed to get you. You're /my/ shiny and no one gets to steal you." And with that made firmly clear, he dropped off to sleep.
