-Fits in the middle of Chapter 03.
The first thing Siercyn did when Seiran waltzed out the door was feed her daughter a scrap of paper. He felt justified and not at all guilty; after all, he did warn her not to leave the baby with him. Besides he had seen the things Renard gave the little boy to gnaw on, a piece of paper wasn't likely to do much harm. He briefly toyed with the idea of giving Kalina the smallest sip of alcohol, but even though Seiran was rather fond of him, she was likely to want a pound of his flesh if her daughter was found drunk in his company. That didn't mean he couldn't do other things to make her see the folly of her actions.
Watching Kalina draw all over her clothes with the pink paint designed for use on lips was amusingly satisfying. He even had to admire the amount of control she had over the small brush; some of the figures she drew were almost decent, for a two year old. Seiran was not expected back until sundown, so he spent the next hour teaching her words she could later use to drive boys crazy, something her mother would not approve of. And if the closest she came to asking someone for a kiss was "ith", it was the thought that counted.
He was relieved when she began to show the first signs of dozing off, until he realized he had to carry her in his arms for her to fall asleep. It left him with nothing but time to plot a complete and fulfilling revenge. The only good thing that could come out of the horrifying experience was that Seiran now owed him, so when he felt like whisking his enchanter away for a day (or two, or even three) she couldn't refuse to take Lazarre during that time. The thought was almost like a switch in his head, changing the direction of his mind from mischief to far more pleasurable thoughts, such as what he would do to Renard should the occasion arise. He had barely planned half a day of pleasure when the red-haired girl was awake again and demanding to be fed, and he added another thing to the long list Seiran owed him for.
Rusty refused to sell him more alcohol, and Seiran was not back yet even though it was already dark outside. Pitch dark. So dark that if someone got lost in the woods they would be lost forever, or at least until the sun came up the next day. Kalina was gnawing on his lapel after he'd pulled away his fingers. They had been waiting for Seiran for over an hour, and he didn't hold out much hope that the little girl would stay quiet for another one.
With a soft sigh, Siercyn tightened his grip on his charge and left the Pelican, pointing out the sights as he took the western path leading to Lorvalis. Kalina cooed happily at the moon and the stars, not at all frightened by the hawk he showed her, and the white flower he picked for her scrutiny was soggy within seconds. They were almost at Lorvalis though, and then he could put her on the couch in the library and read a book while watching her with one eye. And if he were very lucky, Seiran would have a brief moment of panic when she didn't find them at the Pelican and never leave Kalina with him again. Although, he realized suddenly, finding them in the library might have the opposite effect of mistrusting him, and his legs came to a sudden stop as he pondered this new dilemma. But a quick glance around showed him the answer he craved, and, with a smirk, he stepped away from the road.

Seiran felt pleasantly sore, tired and glad to have enough of a grasp on magic that she didn't have to walk all the way back. Her spell took her from one shadow to the other, the second one close to the harbor, and she stretched her arms while walking the short distance to the Pelican. She had meant to write Siercyn and see how he was getting along, but the rush of the fight had blown the thought out of her head. Siercyn was a mature adult though, and she didn't expect he had much trouble.
Her first glance showed no one at the Pelican but Rusty, and when asked he told her Siercyn had left the bar little over an hour ago, muttering something about books. She grinned, waved at the bartender and redirected her steps towards Lorvalis. With any luck, Kalina would be asleep already, giving her a little more time to relax. But the library when she reached it was empty, and the guard at the door didn't remember seeing anyone enter the keep. A quick note to Siercyn received no reply, her bird returning empty-handed. It hadn't taken the creature long to deliver the letter though, so he must still be in the neighborhood. With that in mind, she left Lorvalis at a run.

The tree he had chosen was big and almost comfortable, and after feeding her the last bottle of milk and telling her a story, Kalina had quickly fallen asleep. He had even taken the precaution of covering her head with a thick piece of cloth that might have been a loincloth in its former life. It wouldn't do to have her wake at every loud noise, like her mother shouting his name. Besides, the curses Seiran was using and the threats she was making weren't fit to be heard by someone so young. More than enough time for that later.
He had watched Seiran walk past his tree four times now, looking more frazzled every time, and was wondering if he could keep it up for another hour. By that time she would probably have a few others helping, but would any of them think to look up? And if she asked Breiden, Siercyn was fairly certain that he could lure the Harbinger into the tree with them if he promised the other man a pillow for his head.
But it was very like Seiran to disrupt his plans of the day, and her loud shouting from right underneath the tree did the inevitable. Kalina began to stir and Siercyn tried to quickly keep her pacified with a little more milk. But his luck was against him and the little girl let out a cry that caused the mother on the ground to look up. With a reproving frown at the baby, Siercyn climbed down. The whap she tried to deliver was expected and he ducked it easily, the kick in the shin less so. The baby was taken from his arms while he rubbed at his sore leg, and when he straightened Seiran was still frowning darkly at him. "Beautiful young women shouldn't frown so much," he told her pleasantly, and had the satisfaction of watching her lips twitch with a suppressed smile.
"You must've missed your flirting today," she finally told him, and he grinned unrepentantly at her while offering his arm. She accepted with a snort and a roll of her eyes, and as Siercyn walked the two ladies back to Lorvalis. he realized the day had perhaps not been as god-awful as he'd expected. Not that he would tell Seiran that; he intended to dump Lazarre on her first thing tomorrow before whisking Renard off for a week (at least) in Haphen. And when he came back, he would have the amusement of hearing how Seiran had dealt with Lazarre's bizarre eating habits for his evil plot of vengeance to be completed.
